Masonic Housing Association

31 Great Queen Street,
London, WC2B 5AG
Telephone: 0171 831 5879

The Masonic Housing association was formed in 1975 to take advantage of the financial provisions made available to registered Housing Associations by the Housing Act, 1974, and its object is to build sheltered housing schemes for the elderly.

It is run by a Committee of Management consisting of ten members under the Chairmanship of Lord Burnham, the Provincial Grand Master for Buckinghamshire.

Housing Corporation grants in the past have made it possible to finance four developments and donations to assist the work of the Association have, from time to time, been received from Lodges and individuals. Due to the recent limitations on Housing Corporation grants 'private' funding is now necessary and the scheme under development at Rugely became possible due to financial support from the Province of Staffordshire and the generous grant from Grand Charity in addition to assistance received from the Housing Corporation.

The Association specialises in providing rented accommodation of a high standard for elderly persons who can generally lead an independent life but would benefit by the help of a Resident Warden in an emergency. Each flat is self contained and each scheme has a residents' lounge with kitchen, a laundry, Warden's office, usually a guest room and sometimes a hobbies room.

A proportion of the lettings have to be made available to nominees of the Local Authority as a consequence of receiving a grant from the Housing Corporation.

The Provincial Grand Master of the Province in which a scheme is situated appoints a "House Committee" from Provincial members and some of their ladies to undertake day to day management. The duties of these committees are carried out on a voluntary basis and in the conscientious and enthusiastic manner which is evidenced by the high standard of maintenance of buildings and grounds, and the pleasant environment which is rated highly by the residents.

Financial support has also been received from the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons.

Strong support is given by Local lodges who are extremely generous providing additional amenities and social activities for the residents.
