Masonic Charities Information

History

A General Charity was established soon after Grand Lodge was founded in 1717, and it eventually became the Board of Benevolence. A school for the daughters of Freemasons was opened in 1788, and a charity for clothing and educating the sons of indigent Brethren was established in 1798. These institutions subsequently became the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls and the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys. Care of aged and sick brethren and their wives and widows, by housing them or paying annuities started in 1842; and the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution was formed in 1850.

The Grand Charity took over the functions of the Board of Benevolence in 1981, and the Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys united the R.M.I.G. and R.M.I.B. in 1986. The Masonic Foundation for the Aged and the Sick was formed in 1979, ceased active fund-raising activities in 1989, but the other bodies hold Festivals to raise funds.
