About the Maid's Head Lodge

The Maid's Head Lodge is the inspiration of W.Bro. P.W. Racey P.G.D., whom in 1968 formed a team of 1962 masters to perform masonic plays to raise money for the 1975 R.M.I.B. Festival (now the M.T.G & B.).

While researching the material for the plays he came upon details of a lodge which once existed in Norwich and used to meet at the Maid's Head Tavern. This in fact had been the first lodge to be warranted in Norwich on 11th May 1724.

This information gave Peter Racey the idea of resurrecting the Maid's Head Lodge, which by now had ceased to exist, to form a research lodge which would also produce masonic publications and incorporate his "Demo Team". Under "Research, two papers are given each year, while "Publication" is covered by the New Ashlar, a masonic magazine for Norfolk masons.

The present Maid's Head Lodge No. 8558 was consecrated on 11th May 1974, exactly 250 years to the day after the first lodge had been warranted.

During Norfolk's 1995 RMBI Festival, the Maid's Head Lodge contributed £17,700, of which over £15,000 was raised by the Demonstration Team.
