The Masonic Hall

Bridges Walk,
Thetford,
Norfolk

Map

Perhaps the most unusual Temple premises in the Province, and even in England, this was originally an old water mill and is built over the Thet or little Ouse River.

It is 150 years old and sometimes the sound of the river can clearly be heard inside the building. It is three storeys high and used to have a water wheel, but this was removed during the second World War, when it was occupied by the Ibex Coffee Company who used it for coffee grinding.

(The Company had been bombed out of their premises in London. The premises were strengthened by steelwork and some 50 tons of coffee were stored in what is now the Temple.)

Thet Lodge acquired it in 1960 and after a great deal of work on conversion, by both voluntary and professional labour, it commenced its existance as a Temple in 1962.

There is a large bar and dining room, and a concealed ventilation system. A feature of the Temple is the the seating, which is composed of ex-cinema seats obtained from a cinema in Wellingborough. A public car park (free) adjoins the Temple.
