The Grand Charity

60 Great Queen Street, London WC2B 5AZ
Telephone: 0171 831 9811

Origin

The Grand Charity came into being on 1st January, 1981, and succeeded the Board of Benevolence, which had descended from various committees formed by Grand Lodge for the relief of distressed, the earliest having been set up in 1727.

Aim

When the Grand Charity was established it was intended to be a registered charity more outward looking than the other Masonic charities, and flexible enough to respond quickly to urgent need, as in cases of natural disaster, while continuing to help individual Freemasons or their dependants who are in distress.

Management

The Grand Charity is constitutionally independent of both Grand Lodge and the other Masonic charities. It is governed by the Brethren who are members of Grand Lodge, for which purpose General Meetings are held quarterly. For convenience these are during, but separate from, the Quarterly Communications of Grand Lodge. Minutes of the General Meetings are published with the proceedings of Grand Lodge.

The Constitution and Regulations of the Grand Charity, and the Rules of the Petitions Committee of the Council form part of Grand Lodge's Book of Constitutions which is available from Freemason's Hall.
